The DVD/book Asphalto/Routemaster is many things: a Gesamtkunstwerk which discusses male and female identity, automobile culture and speed through graphic design, still photography, street poetry and experimental filmmaking; an attempt to achieve synthesis between different forms of expression and to find technical solutions that revitalize the formative tradition in experimental design and film; an urban aria about cars, girls and gas stations; a concept-based film which describes the relationship between a man (Peter Franzen) and a woman (Irina Bjorklund) by means of metaphor and visual symbols related to asphalt, service stations and automotive sports; a unified formal language created gradually using an expanding wall of sound, collage-like superimpositions, fictional demolition derby sequences and experimental documentation of 13 Finnish service stations twice each in a 13-year interval; a rhythmic mosaic about speed and human cadavers that have been used in crash tests; a montage of rhythmically organized repetitions involving abstraction of motion that merges the subject with the film material; and, finally, a film that resembles a live concert and creates a real physical experience. Please note that this DVD is from England and is formatted in their regional PAL video format. IT WILL NOT WORK IN STANDARD U.S. DVD PLAYERS.
